Switching your major? Don’t worry- you’re not alone. In fact; on average, college students switch their major three times before finally settling!
1. Are you unhappy or just tired of studying?
If you’re unhappy with your major, take some time to think about whether or not it’s something that you want to continue pursuing. Figure out what is making you unhappy- if you’re not doing well academically you might just need some study strategies. But if you can’t stand reading the material in front of you and feel as though you’d be more passionate about studying something else, you might want to consider switching your major.
2. Are you sure you know what you want to do?
I know I was scared of switching my major because I didn’t want to let down my parents, who would brag about having a daughter that was attending college and studying Biology. Two months into college, I knew this major was not for me. I was doing well academically- I got all A’s and B’s! But I realized that these bragging rights shouldn’t force me into a future that I didn’t want.
Make sure that this switch is something that you want to do for yourself- not to impress your family or peers. Your major should be a subject area that you are truly passionate about. I switched to fashion merchandising and I didn’t even mind waking up for an 8 a.m. three days a week because I loved the fashion class I took! It’s also important to not switch majors because of the expected salary associated with that career- after all, money cannot buy happiness.
Now, make your decision!
There is a time in every college student’s life where they must make their own choices. Now that you’re an independent individual, you need to think for yourself. Think about your life, your future, and what you want. Your career is something very important and is something that you need to choose for yourself, not something that looks good to other people. You’re in college, it’s okay to be selfish and make your own decisions! Living in the real world is a short four years away (for many), and you want to be passionate about your career because the passionate people are the ones who are getting the jobs.
Lastly, don’t forget to follow your heart because life is too short for any regrets! Good luck!
