How to make money without losing your mind.
College is expensive. Tuition, housing, meal plans, groceries, textbooks, toiletries, gas money.. it adds up. It's no surprise that 73% of students work at least 1 part time job during the school year.
I'm currently working 3 paying jobs. I work the front desk of a residence hall, I'm paid to be a note taker in one of my classes, and I'm also a Campus Manager for University Tees. Juggling these jobs on top of being involved in 5 organizations and school work is a lot to handle. There are some weeks where I have several tests and I have a mental breakdown; but for the most part, I love it. I love being busy and being successful and I wouldn't have it any other way.
If you're in a similar position as me, you know how overwhelming it can be. So here are some tips that I've picked up to help you out.
Use a Planner
I'm obsessed with my Lilly Pulitzer agenda. I swear that planning our your week makes a huge difference! I write down everything- all of my meetings, my work schedule, and class assignments. This allows me to know when I have a busy day coming up so that I can prepare for it in advance. Using a planner is super helpful- so if you haven't started using one, start now.
Know When to Say "No"
You need to know what your limit is. This is not Mean Girls- the limit DOES exist. I'm the type of person who hates saying no. If I'm crazy busy and someone asks for my help on a project, I will say yes. I usually end up taking on too many projects at one and end up having a mental breakdown halfway through the week. It's okay to say "no," so don't feel bad the next time someone asks you to do something that you don't have time for!
Schedule Wisely
Remember that school comes first. Make sure that you schedule your work around your classes; not the other way around. Make sure that you have enough time to eat meals and study in between. Also, don't forget to schedule in time to have fun! If you're crazy busy every day, try to find a 30 minute slot to dedicate to Netflix or relaxation.
Get Sleep and Have Fun
It's nearly impossible to get 8 hours of sleep each night while in college. But, you can certainly try. If you have an 8 a.m., make sure that you go to sleep at a reasonable time the night before. If you can't fall asleep at decent hours, power naps will become your best friend. Schedule time between work and classes to take a nap for an hour- you'll wake up feeling so much more energized and refreshed! Don't forget to have fun too. You're in college- you should celebrate all of the hard work that you're doing!!
Be a Productive Procrastinator
It's easy to become a procrastinator in college when you have so much free reign. Try to beat that! If you feel like giving up on an assignment to watch Netflix- don't. Instead, pull up a different assignment to work on. This way, you're still being productive; even if you are procrastinating on one assignment.
