To the student who is having a rough semester,
So you’re having a rough semester. Maybe you failed a test, went through a break-up, or lost a loved one. Maybe you have been slacking the past few months, and now it’s all catching up to you. It’s so easy to lose focus when it comes to our school work. We’re busy living our lives and making the most of our college experience. But no matter what is happening in our lives, we can make it through this semester.
This semester is by far the most difficult one that I’ve experienced. I’ve cried a lot- probably more than ever. It’s halfway through the second semester of my sophomore year, and you would think that I would have college figured out by now. Unfortunately, I don’t. I’ve lost friends, I’ve been struggling in my classes, and I have so many other personal issues to sort through. On top of that, I’ve overbooked myself with work and campus involvement to the point where I'm constantly stressed.
No matter what you’re going through; just know that it’s going to be okay. We’re college students and our lives are crazy. So many things are temporary and these four years are truly a roller-coaster. One week, everything is perfect and you can’t stop smiling. The next week, everything goes wrong and you wonder what you did to deserve it all. We might stress ourselves out over grades more than we should. We might cry because our professors are giving us hard times. We might even consider dropping out or transferring because we’re so stressed out. If you can relate to any of that, I’m here to tell you that everything is going to be okay.
If your grade is falling in a class, it’s alright. You have a few more weeks to boost it. Or you can retake it next semester. It’s okay to stay an extra semester or two to retake a course and achieve the GPA that you want. I’ve seen too many friends have mental breakdowns about a bad grade, myself included, and we need to understand that sometimes it’s inevitable. We aren’t perfect. At the end of the day, it’s one bad grade. We will recover from it. We aren’t defined by our bad grades or our good grades. So cry it out, but don’t forget that you are smart. You are capable of incredible things and your future will be bright, no matter what is currently happening in your life.
If you are struggling with personal issues, it’s alright. You might have let someone down. You might be going through a rough break-up. Maybe you have lost a loved one.. No matter what terrible things have happened, it will be okay. Spend time with yourself and do things you enjoy. Go out to dinner with a friend and laugh. Don’t sit in your room and be miserable because things are going to get better.
College is a place to learn. These four years are the years that it’s acceptable to make mistakes. We will learn material in our classes, but we will also learn more about ourselves. It might be a terrible semester, but you will take so much knowledge away from it. You will get through this, I promise. Take a breath, focus, and continue to push yourself.
Everything will be okay.
